Way back in 2004, as a project manager of a child development project, I happened to attend a grant writing workshop on capacity building, sponsored by an International non-profit. This workshop opened my eyes to realise that, competency matters not just the certificate of completion. Over the time, several such workshops and courses have drastically improved my grant writing skill level. Just focus on developing your competency than bragging another certificate of credit.

Probably before getting enrolled ask few questions for yourself.

  • What are you seeking to know about grant writing?
  • Do you have any specific goals for it?
  • Are you comfortable learning with a group or you prefer individual learning?
  • Do you prefer online self-paced method?
  • Or you require physical classes with time frames set?
  • Are you seeking to earn education credits for your career or college?
  • Will you be able to afford the cost? Or you are trying free grant writing course.?

As you try answering these questions, I am sure you will be able to decide and enrol in a grant writing course that best works for you. You should be able to research and decide before proceeding. Remember, it is not an issue of free or paid, but it should fetch some cultural currency, adding value for your time and energy, while increasing your competency.

Each one of us has different learning pace, skills and attitudes, hence, we need to know what works for us and what not. Are you familiar with the word ‘Andragogy’ synonymous with adult education, coined by Malcolm Shephered Knowles an American educator, defined it as the art and science of adult learning?

According to Malcolm Knowles, four suggested principles apply for adult learning

  1. Adults need to be involved in the planning and evaluation of their instruction.

  2. Experience (including mistakes) provides the basis for the learning activities.

  3. Adults are most interested in learning subjects that have immediate relevance and impact to their job or personal life.

  4. Adult education is problem-centered rather than content-oriented.

Before getting enroled, research for a while and try to review the course on your own and see if the content and delivery method of the course meets the above four parameters.   1. There are so many grants out there to be had. I can see why learning how to put together a proposal could be profitable.

    The way words are put on paper has a big impact on the reader. Every aspect of writing can either sway or turn away your reader. This is definitely a learned skill.

    A learned skill that could be a money maker. Are there many of these free workshops around? Might be worth the time. Who doesn’t like grant money

In simple terms I would ” necessity is the mother of all inventions”. It there is a need learning becomes natural. This learned or acquired knowledge could open doors of employment or carrier.
